Frank Gotch was born in Iowa in 1877. He was a Catch Wrestling Heavyweight World Champion and one of the first American Sport Superstars. A phenom of raw athletic talent, Gotch started wrestling at an early age. He was a student of former Champion Farmer Burns. The Old farmer mentored him to dominate the world of competitive Catch Wrestling in an unprecedented manner. Furthermore, he was known for his tremendous strength, lightning quickness, cat-like reflexes and impeccable technique. Gotch was a master strategist and defeated all the great heavyweights of his era.
Career Highlights
One of the most memorable highlights of his career was his rematch against European Champion George Hackenschmidt. The event took place at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Gotch defeated the Russian Lion for the second time in front of 35,000 spectators. The undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and idol of millions was instrumental inĀ bringing legitimate professional wrestling to the mainstream.
In addition to all his accomplishments, on July 4th 2012 an 8-foot-tall bronze memorial statue was unveiled in his honor at Bicknell Park in his hometown of Humboldt, Iowa.
